Grindelwald has been one of the nicest destinations in the Alps I have been so far. The town is just below the famous mountain Eiger and starting point of the trip to the highest railway station in Europe – the Jungfraujoch at 3471m.
The first three nights we stayed at a very nice holiday flat „An der Egg“ in Grindelwald. From here we did 2 day-tours. The first day we took the Pfingsteggbahn and hiked to the Bäregghütte high above the glacier gorge. From the hut you have a great view back on Grindelwald and on the Grindelwald glacier. In the afternoon we visited the deep glacier gorge which was impressive.
The following day we took the Männlichenbahn early in the morning and hiked to the peak at 2343m. From here you have a great view of the famous mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. There is a fantastic trail from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg from where the trains to Jungfraujoch (and also back to Grindelwald) depart. We hiked a little further to the station Alpiglen just below the Eiger Nordwand from where we took the train back to Grindelwald. The train up to Jungfraujoch was far too expensive (>100Euros pP).
The third hiking day was the best. Fantastic blue sky. We packed our big bags and took the gondola to the First station. Here we left our stuff at the Berggasthaus First and hiked to the Bachalpsee which is famous for the Panorama. From the Bachalpsee we hiked up to the Faulhorn at 2681m with a hut at the top where we had lunch. With a long stop at the Bachalpsee we went back to the First.
After dinner I took all my camera equipment and we hiked one hour back to the Bachalpsee for some sunset pictures. It was not perfect (there was too much wind to have flat water) but still great. In the dark we went back with flashlights. Totally worth it.
Even if Switzerland is really expensive it was worth the money, especially the night (and view!) at the First mountain hut.
